Openreach

Openreach a BT business group owns and manages the local access network that connects homes and businesses to telephone exchanges. Openreach provides network services to Communications Providers carrying out maintenance and delivering installation work on their behalf if required.

As part of Consultation between the BT Group and the regulator (Ofcom) about Competition in the industry, Openreach was created. Openreach has a remit to ensure that the UK Telecommunications Industry has fair and equal access to the backhaul and local access networks.

Two of Openreach's main products are:

  • Local Loop Unbundling, this enables Communications Providers to offer the full range of voice and broadband services, without having to route through BT's main network.
  • Wholesale Line Rental, this enables Communications Providers to offer their own-branded telephony services over the Openreach network.
